I always keep a batch of this homemade taco seasoning on hand in my pantry. I use it to make taco meat or in any recipe that requires taco seasoning. I make a lot of Mexican inspired dishes, so I use this seasoning on a weekly basis. I did have this seasoning recipe as a part of another post, but decided that it needed a post of it’s own. I also updated it to make four tablespoons, which is the same as two of the store bought taco packets. You can also control how much you use, depending on how bold you want your meat to be.
Speaking of store bought packets, they are always filled with junk and have way too many carbs! When I first started keto, it was something I didn’t realize and the carbs were adding up quick! I’ve been making my homemade version for a long time and I think it tastes much better than the packets. Homemade is always better anyway! Plus the ingredients are clean. You don’t have to worry about maltodextrin, corn starch, MSG or added sugars. Mine is just a blend of spices. The store bought taco seasoning contains 18 carbs per packet, which is typically 2 Tbsp. My seasoning is only 3.6 net carbs for 2 Tbsp, so that’s a huge difference!
Here’s what you need for this homemade taco seasoning: Chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Give all of the spices a good mix and store in an airtight container. It literally takes five minutes! Some of the recipes include: enchiladas, taco casserole, salsa chicken, a couple of skillet recipes, cheese shells, enchilada meatball bake and even a taco chili.
